Lots of people have asked why I’d give up supermarkets.
The answer is many and varied. For me, it’s about food more that anything.
Firstly, I think we will eat better by doing this.
Recently, I read In Defence of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto by Michael Pollan and it revolutionised the way I bought food for my family. It deals how the industrialisation of the agriculture in the US combined with the rise of ‘nutritionism’ and the sway of the media means that we are sometimes duped and sometimes have no choice but to eat things that are not good for us. It’s got a sense of humour and is easy to read, but if you are interested and time poor Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual is a condensed version with deals with the guidelines for eating that he devised. They are
Eat Food. Not too Much. Mostly Plants.
Think about food this way and you can’t go wrong! I think I have more chance of following these guidelines if I stay out of the supermarket.
Secondly, in Australia, at least, I see problems with having two big businesses in control of most of our food. (Not to mention petrol, alcohol and all the other business lines they have). Yes, I know there are other options than Coles and Woolies. It’s not necessarily that I have a problem with big business per se, after all I’m going to eschew my local family-owned supermarket too. But these one-stop-shops take a huge percentage of my weekly grocery allowance if I let them.
There are environmental arguments (I ask you how much coal are they burning to have a open-fronted, stand alone heater for BBQ chickens in store) and some moral ones (did you know that coles and woolies have massive interests in poker machines in Australia?) and I hope to visit all of these over the course of this blog. But I also hope to be healthier by making this choice and richer, for I am convinced that despite ‘rolling back prices’, 2-for-1 deals and ‘dollar dazzlers’ you spend more in a supermarket than you do by shopping at the grocer and butcher….you just don’t realise that you are.
What about you? What would make you give up supermarkets? Please let me know!
