I use a traditional family recipe for ANZAC biscuits. It’s not a particularly ground-breaking recipe. In fact it’s very similar to one in an Australian Women’s Weekly cookbook I have. But the one I use is hand written by my mother in law whom I never knew. It has her annotations and experiments with substitutions on it. The simple act of cooking it connects me to my family’s past, as well as to my nation’s.
