Until the beginning of this year, I had been casually throwing any takeaway coffee cup that came my way into the recycling. I would diligently remove the plastic lid and put the bottom half in the paper recycling, feeling that warm glow of superiority that you can sometimes get when you ‘do the right thing’ with your waste. Then, a friend saw me do it and said: “You know they aren’t recycable, don’t you?”
“Seriously?” I argued. “The cup is paper.”
“Paper lined with plastic” she told me. Together we sighed, and agreed that although it probably wasn’t the biggest problem the world has right now, it should be on someone’s agenda to get a bunch of smart people in a room to find a workable technology that could seperate the paper and plastic in the recycling process. You would think that with all the takeaway coffee we drink in Sydney it would have already been done. But sadly, no. In fact, the cups that our instant caffeine hit comes in will outlast our time on this planet.
Since then I’ve been trying to remember a reuseable cup, but I haven’t been very good at it. Even with the best intentions in the world, I have often forgotten my cup in the morning rush and enjoyed my coffee with a side dose of silent guilt. BUT NO MORE!
I’m embarking on a quest to remember my cup by photographing it. Sounds a bit naft – and look, it probably is – but so far I’ve remembered my cup everyday this week just because I know take a picture of it. So it seems to be working! If you have memory-issues when it comes to sustainability I hope that you’ll join in this campaign. Just follow me on Instagram, take a picture and use the hashtag #keepcupadventures!
NB: I can’t even remember where or when I got the keep cup that I use. It is an actual KeepCup brand cup. They aren’t behind this or sponsoring this in any way – although they are totally welcome to jump on board. It doesn’t matter which brand of cup you use – as long as it it reuseable! Reuseable coffee cups – from KeepCup and a range of others – are available from Biome Eco Stores. I am marketing affiliate for them which means if you do use this link to purchase I will get a teensy commission (but the price won’t change for you).
