The Original Green Up My Kitchen Workshop
This workshop communicates evidence-based ideas around food sustainability in the most fun way possible – a hands-on cooking class! As participants cook a seasonal, vegetarian meal together they use each ingredient as a springboard to investigate healthy and sustainable food behaviours. The workshop finishes with participants enjoying what they have cooked and strategising together how they can make their own kitchens more sustainable.
Jennifer Richards is a sustainability communicator who has written about food, grocery choices and sustainability since 2010 at beyondthetrolley.com and for groups such as Harvest Trails and Markets, the Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance, Otter – the sustainability newsletter and 1 Million Women. She is experienced at teaching, coaching and presenting to small groups having previously worked as a tour guide and a voice and dialect teacher. A born story-teller, she is now applying her energetic and positive presentation style to help people understand the environmental impact of their food. She has a Masters of Sustainability from Sydney University and is also a researcher specialising in peri-urban agriculture in the Sydney Basin.
At the end of the workshop participants will have had fun! It’s all hands on learning – so they will have cooked and eaten a vegetarian meal. They will understand how food processing and packaging impacts the environment, as well as the environmental benefits of minimising food waste, reducing consumption of animal products and composting. They will leave equipped with simple strategies to start to grow food, support their local food economy and reduce their grocery spend by eating sustainably.
